Description:
Civil Tech Pty Ltd delivered a new river crossing at Sandow Road, Verdun, improving access to Hills Christian Community School and strengthening connectivity across the Onkaparinga River. The works involved the demolition and removal of the existing bridge structure, followed by a comprehensive construction program focused on long-term safety, functionality, and environmental sensitivity.
The new crossing comprised a reinforced concrete culvert system, including the excavation and preparation of foundations, placement of in-situ base and apron slabs, and installation of precast culvert units and wingwalls. To support improved water flow and ecological outcomes, the design was modified to include a widened culvert formation, rebated set downs for fish passage, and a lowered profile to optimise hydraulic performance. Structural elements such as concrete edge beams and hold-down brackets were installed, with provisions made for future service conduits.
Further works included the backfilling of culverts and wingwalls, the placement of rip rap rock for erosion control, and the construction of cement-treated rubble approaches. The project incorporated pre- and post-construction environmental management measures, including river diversion and water quality monitoring. From start to finish, the crossing was delivered with a strong focus on quality assurance, site safety, and minimal environmental impact—resulting in a durable, accessible, and community-benefiting piece of infrastructure.
